I went to New Zealand (North Island) in November this year and was lucky enough to go on a tour of Hobbiton (loved, loved, loved The Lord of The Rings movies). The tour was booked through Bush and Beach New Zealand and was definitely one of the highlights of my two week holiday.
We had Warren as our driver who gave us commentary and insight into some of New Zealand’s history (and had us randomly count dairy tankers and cows for a bit of fun) which was very interesting and made the drive go quicker (the coffee stop and ice cream stop definitely helped). They provided hotel pick up and drop off which was brilliant.
Once we arrived at the farm where Hobbiton is located (in Matamata) we were greeted by our tour guide Ethan who showed us around, helped take photos and ran through some background information on the set and how things were filmed for both The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit films. The tour ended with a mug of hobbit ale (or cider), a buffet style lunch at The Green Dragon and a quick stop at the gift store. While it seemed a little pricey at the time of booking I found it to be great value for money.
